Abū Saʿīd al-Ashajj narrated to us: ʿUqbah ibn Khālid narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd, who said: The Messenger of Allah’s (ﷺ) call to prayer repeated each phrase twice, both in the adhān and in the iqāmah. Abū ʿĪsā said: In another transmission of the hadith of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd, Wakīʿ narrated from al-Aʿmash, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, who said: The Companions of Muḥammad (ﷺ) told us that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd saw the adhān in a dream. Shuʿbah also narrated from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd saw the adhān in a dream. This is more authentic than the report through Ibn Abī Laylā, because ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā did not hear directly from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd. Some scholars held that both the adhān and iqāmah should be pronounced in pairs. This was the view of Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, and the people of Kūfah. Abū ʿĪsā said: Ibn Abī Laylā was Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, the judge of Kūfah. He did not hear anything directly from his father, though he narrated reports from a man who transmitted from his father.

The compiler contrasts a disconnected route with transmissions through Wakīʿ and Shuʿbah, which he considers more authentic.

  • ‏ وَقَالَ شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي لَيْلَى أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ زَيْدٍ رَأَى الأَذَانَ فِي الْمَنَامِ ‏.

The source reports a scholarly practice in which both calls repeat phrases in pairs, attributed to Sufyān, Ibn al-Mubārak, and the people of Kūfah.
