Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Yaḥyā ibn Mūsā narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Yūnus, from Ibn Shihāb, who said: Abū Hurayrah said, “No one should call people to prayer unless he has performed ablution.” Abū ʿĪsā said: This is more authentic than the first hadith. Abū ʿĪsā said: Ibn Wahb did not attribute the hadith of Abū Hurayrah to the Prophet (ﷺ), and this is more authentic than the report of al-Walīd ibn Muslim. Al-Zuhrī did not hear directly from Abū Hurayrah. Scholars differed about calling the adhān without ablution: some disliked it, including al-Shāfiʿī and Isḥāq; others allowed it, including Sufyān al-Thawrī, Ibn al-Mubārak, and Aḥmad.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

The compiler prefers the non-prophetic attribution through Ibn Wahb to the raised version through al-Walīd ibn Muslim, and notes that al-Zuhrī did not hear directly from Abū Hurayrah.
