Hannad narrated to us: Waki narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ibrahim ibn al-Muhajir, from Abu al-Sha‘tha, who said: A man left the mosque after the call to prayer for Asr had been given there. Abu Hurayrah said: ‘As for this man, he has disobeyed Abu al-Qasim, peace and blessings be upon him.’

Abu Isa said: A report on this subject is also related from Uthman. The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is hasan sahih. The practice among the scholars, from the Companions of the Prophet and those after them, is that no one should leave the mosque after the call to prayer except for an excuse, such as being without ablution or having some unavoidable matter. It is reported from Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i that he said one may leave so long as the caller has not begun the call signaling that the prayer is about to start. Abu Isa said: In our view, this applies to someone who has an excuse to leave. Abu al-Sha‘tha’s name was Sulaym ibn Aswad; he was the father of Ash‘ath ibn Abi al-Sha‘tha. Ash‘ath ibn Abi al-Sha‘tha also narrated this hadith from his father.
