Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Waki narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Khalid al-Hadhdha, from Abu Qilabah, from Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah with a cousin of mine. He said to us: ‘When the two of you travel, give the call to prayer and the call immediately before the prayer, and let the older of you lead the prayer.’
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Most scholars acted on it and preferred giving the call to prayer while traveling. Some said that the call immediately before prayer is sufficient, and that the call to prayer is only for someone who wishes to gather people. The first view is more sound; this was the view of Ahmad and Ishaq.
