Muhammad ibn Humayd al-Razi narrated to us: Abu Tumaylah narrated to us: Abu Hamzah narrated to us, from Jabir, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet said: ‘Whoever gives the call to prayer for seven years, seeking reward from Allah, a release from the Fire will be recorded for him.’
Abu Isa said: Reports on this subject are also related from Abd Allah ibn Masud, Thawban, Muawiyah, Anas, Abu Hurayrah, and Abu Said. The hadith of Ibn Abbas is gharib. Abu Tumaylah’s name was Yahya ibn Wadih, and Abu Hamzah al-Sukkari’s name was Muhammad ibn Maymun. Critics considered Jabir ibn Yazid al-Jufi weak; Yahya ibn Said and Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi abandoned him. Abu Isa said: I heard al-Jarud say: I heard Waki say, ‘Were it not for Jabir al-Jufi, the people of Kufa would have had no hadith; and were it not for Hammad, the people of Kufa would have had no jurisprudence.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler identifies the transmitter in this chain as weak and reports that major critics abandoned him.
The compiler calls the report gharib and explicitly cites the weakness and abandonment of Jabir al-Jufi in its chain.
Should the chain criticism be made more prominent in the presentation of the reward claim?
