Ishaq al-Ansari narrated to us: Ma‘n narrated to us: Malik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Ishaq ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi Talhah, from Anas ibn Malik, that his grandmother Mulaykah invited the Messenger of Allah to a meal she had prepared. He ate from it, then said: ‘Stand, so we may lead you in prayer.’ Anas said: I went to a woven mat of ours that had darkened from long use and sprinkled it with water. The Messenger of Allah stood on it; the orphan and I stood in a row behind him, and the elderly woman stood behind us. He led us in two rakahs of prayer, then left.
Abu Isa said: The hadith of Anas is hasan sahih. Most scholars acted on it: when a man and a woman are with the imam, the man stands to the imam’s right and the woman behind them. Some have cited this hadith to permit prayer when a man stands alone behind a row, arguing that the boy was not counted as praying and that Anas must have been alone behind the Prophet in the row. Their conclusion is incorrect: the Prophet placed the orphan with him behind; if the Prophet had not counted the orphan as praying, he would have placed him to his right. It is also reported from Musa ibn Anas, from Anas, that he prayed with the Prophet and the Prophet placed him to his right. This hadith indicates that the Prophet was praying voluntarily, intending to bring blessing to them.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler rejects the argument that Anas was alone behind the Prophet, reasoning that the orphan boy was also placed in the row behind.
The compiler presents this as an argument used by some scholars and explicitly rejects it using the orphan boy's placement.
Is the rejected inference clearly attributed to its proponents rather than the compiler?
