Jami` at-Tirmidhi 239
Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Qutaybah and Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us; they said: Yahya ibn al-Yaman narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Dhi’b, from Sa‘id ibn Sim‘an, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah pronounced the takbir for prayer, he spread his fingers.
Abu Isa said: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is hasan. More than one transmitter narrated this hadith from Ibn Abi Dhi’b, from Sa‘id ibn Sim‘an, from Abu Hurayrah, that when the Prophet entered prayer, he raised his hands fully extended. This is more sound than Yahya ibn al-Yaman’s version; Yahya ibn al-Yaman erred in this hadith.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler explicitly rejects the wording about spreading the fingers as an error and prefers the version describing raised hands.
The compiler says Yahya ibn al-Yaman erred and prefers the variant wording that the Prophet raised his hands fully.
Is the criticized wording kept distinct from the version the compiler considers more sound?
