Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Uqbah ibn Mukram and Nasr ibn Ali al-Jahdami narrated to us; they said: Abu Qutaybah narrated to us—Salm ibn Qutaybah—from Tu‘mah ibn Amr, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever prays to Allah in congregation for forty days, catching the opening takbir, will be granted two guarantees: a guarantee against the Fire and a guarantee against hypocrisy.’

Abu Isa said: This hadith has also been narrated from Anas as his own statement, and I know of no one who attributed it to the Prophet except Salm ibn Qutaybah, from Tu‘mah ibn Amr, from Habib ibn Abi Thabit, from Anas. Rather, the report is narrated only from Habib ibn Abi Habib al-Bajali, from Anas, as Anas’s statement. Hannad narrated this to us: Waki narrated to us, from Khalid ibn Tahman, from Habib ibn Abi Habib al-Bajali, from Anas, similarly, without attributing it to the Prophet. Ismail ibn Ayyash narrated this hadith from Umara ibn Ghaziyyah, from Anas ibn Malik, from Umar ibn al-Khattab, from the Prophet, similarly. This hadith is not preserved; it is a mursal report, and Umara ibn Ghaziyyah did not meet Anas ibn Malik. Muhammad ibn Ismail said: Habib ibn Abi Habib was called Abu al-Kashutha, and he is also said to have been called Abu Umayrah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The compiler challenges the raised attribution of the forty-day report and identifies a mawquf version as the established form; a separate raised route is called unpreserved and disconnected.

Abu Isa says the raised attribution is known only through one route and contrasts it with the report stopped at Anas.

Is the raised-versus-mawquf distinction, including the separately rejected mursal route, clearly preserved?
