Muhammad ibn Musa al-Basri narrated to us: Jafar ibn Sulayman al-Duba‘i narrated to us, from Ali ibn Ali al-Rifa‘i, from Abu al-Mutawakkil, from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, who said: When the Messenger of Allah rose for night prayer, he would say the takbir, then say: ‘Glory and praise be to You, O Allah; blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god besides You.’ Then he would say: ‘Allah is supremely great.’ Then he would say: ‘I seek refuge in Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan, the accursed—from his promptings, his puffing, and his spitting.’

Reports on this subject are also related from Ali, A’ishah, Abd Allah ibn Masud, Jabir, Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, and Ibn Umar. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Abu Sa‘id is the best-known hadith on this subject. Some scholars followed this hadith. Most scholars, however, followed the report that the Prophet used to say: ‘Glory and praise be to You, O Allah; blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god besides You.’ The same is reported from Umar ibn al-Khattab and Abd Allah ibn Masud. This was the practice of most scholars among the Successors and others. The chain of the hadith of Abu Sa‘id has been criticized: Yahya ibn Sa‘id criticized Ali ibn Ali al-Rifa‘i, and Ahmad said this hadith is not authentic.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report includes two additional opening supplications after the takbir; the compiler notes that most scholars used the shorter opening formula and records criticism of this report's chain.

Hamz, nafkh, and nafth are traditional terms for satanic incitement; puffing/pride and spitting/poetry have interpretive shades.

Would a translator note or a more conventional rendering of these three terms be preferable?
