Ahmad ibn Abdah al-Dabbi narrated to us: al-Mu‘tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us: he said: Ismail ibn Hammad narrated to me, from Abu Khalid, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet used to begin his prayer with ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.’
Abu Isa said: This hadith’s chain is not strong. A number of scholars among the Prophet’s Companions, including Abu Hurayrah, Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, and Ibn al-Zubayr, as well as those among the Successors who came after them, held this view: they considered that the basmalah should be recited aloud. This was also the view of al-Shafi‘i. Ismail ibn Hammad was the son of Abi Sulayman. Abu Khalid is said to be Abu Khalid al-Walibi, whose name was Hurmuz; he was from Kufa.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler presents the audible-basmalah position while expressly judging this report’s chain weak; the prior block recorded the contrary position as another scholarly view.
The compiler reports a weak chain but also notes that several Companions and Successors held for audible recitation.
Is the chain criticism sufficiently distinguished from the separately reported legal position?
