Bundar—Muhammad ibn Bashshar—narrated to us: Yahya ibn Sa‘id and Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us; they said: Sufyan narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Hujr ibn Anbas, from Wa’il ibn Hujr, who said: I heard the Prophet recite ‘not those who have incurred anger, nor those who have gone astray,’ then say: ‘Amen,’ prolonging it with his voice.
Reports on this subject are also related from Ali and Abu Hurayrah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Wa’il ibn Hujr is hasan. More than one scholar among the Prophet’s Companions, the Successors, and those after them held this view: a man should raise his voice when saying Amen and not say it quietly. This was the view of al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Shu‘bah narrated this hadith from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Hujr Abu al-Anbas, from Alqamah ibn Wa’il, from his father: the Prophet recited the same verses, said ‘Amen,’ and lowered his voice. Abu Isa said: I heard Muhammad say that Sufyan’s hadith is more sound than Shu‘bah’s in this matter, and Shu‘bah erred in several points: he called him Hujr Abu al-Anbas, but he is Hujr ibn Anbas, whose teknonym is Abu al-Sakan; Shu‘bah added Alqamah ibn Wa’il, although he is not in the chain, which is instead from Hujr ibn Anbas directly from Wa’il ibn Hujr; and Shu‘bah said the Prophet lowered his voice, whereas he prolonged it with his voice. Abu Isa said: I asked Abu Zur‘ah about this hadith, and he said that Sufyan’s hadith is more sound than Shu‘bah’s. Al-Ala ibn Salih al-Asadi also narrated from Salamah ibn Kuhayl a report like Sufyan’s.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The commentary prefers Sufyan’s chain and vocalization wording over Shu‘bah’s, explicitly identifying errors in the latter’s narrator name, chain, and description of the voice.
The compiler lists multiple errors in Shu'bah's version and prefers Sufyan's narration, including a different description of how Amen was voiced.
Are all three criticized differences in Shu'bah's version preserved and attributed correctly?
