Abu Isa said: Al-Fadl ibn al-Sabbah al-Baghdadi narrated to us: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us: al-Zuhri narrated to us, with this chain, a report like Ibn Abi Umar’s. Reports on this subject are also related from Umar, Ali, Wa’il ibn Hujr, Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, Anas, Abu Hurayrah, Abu Humayd, Abu Usayd, Sahl ibn Sa‘d, Muhammad ibn Maslamah, Abu Qatadah, Abu Musa al-Ashari, Jabir, and Umayr al-Laythi. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Umar is hasan sahih. Among the Prophet’s Companions, Ibn Umar, Jabir ibn Abd Allah, Abu Hurayrah, Anas, Ibn Abbas, Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, and others held this view; among the Successors were al-Hasan al-Basri, Ata, Tawus, Mujahid, Nafi, Salim ibn Abd Allah, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, and others. Malik, Ma‘mar, al-Awza‘i, Ibn Uyaynah, Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad, and Ishaq also held this view.

Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak said: The hadith of those who raise their hands has been established. He cited the hadith of al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, whereas the hadith of Ibn Masud—that the Prophet did not raise his hands except the first time—has not been established. Ahmad ibn Abdah al-Amuli narrated this to us: Wahb ibn Zam‘ah narrated to us, from Sufyan ibn Abd al-Malik, from Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak. Yahya ibn Musa narrated to us: Ismail ibn Abi Uways said that Malik ibn Anas held that the hands should be raised during prayer. Yahya also narrated to us: Abd al-Razzaq said that Ma‘mar held that the hands should be raised during prayer. I heard al-Jarud ibn Muadh say: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, Umar ibn Harun, and al-Nadr ibn Shumayl used to raise their hands when beginning the prayer, when bowing, and when raising their heads.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The compiler supports raising the hands at the opening takbir, before bowing, and when rising from bowing, and reports that Ibn al-Mubarak judged the contrary Ibn Masud report unestablished.

Ibn al-Mubarak explicitly ranks the raised-hands report as established and the report limiting it to the first time as unestablished.

Is this evaluation clearly attributed to Ibn al-Mubarak rather than stated as an unqualified narrator verdict?
