Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas said: We used to do that, but then we were forbidden to do it and commanded to place our palms on our knees. Qutaybah narrated this to us: Abu Awanah narrated to us, from Abu Ya‘fur, from Mus‘ab ibn Sa‘d, from his father Sa‘d, similarly.
Abu Humayd al-Sa‘idi’s name was Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa‘d ibn al-Mundhir. Abu Usayd al-Sa‘idi’s name was Malik ibn Rabi‘ah. Abu Husayn’s name was Uthman ibn Asim al-Asadi. Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami’s name was Abd Allah ibn Habib. Abu Ya‘fur was Abd al-Rahman ibn Ubayd ibn Nistas. The other Abu Ya‘fur, al-Abdi, was named Waqid, also said to be Waqdan; he is the one who narrated from Abd Allah ibn Abi Awfa. Both were from Kufa.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The passage clarifies the earlier mention of tatbiq by stating that it was forbidden and replaced with placing the palms on the knees; it distinguishes two transmitters called Abu Ya‘fur.
Two different transmitters share the teknonym Abu Ya'fur; the source distinguishes them by name and lineage.
Are the two Abu Ya'fur transmitters sufficiently distinguished to prevent conflation?
