Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi narrated to us: Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi Salamah al-Majishun narrated to us: My uncle narrated to me, from Abd al-Rahman al-Araj, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Rafi, from Ali ibn Abi Talib, who said: When the Messenger of Allah raised his head from bowing, he would say: ‘Allah hears whoever praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs all praise, filling the heavens, filling the earth, filling whatever is between them, and filling whatever else You will thereafter.’
Reports on this subject are also related from Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Abi Awfa, Abu Juhaifah, and Abu Sa‘id. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ali is hasan sahih. Some scholars acted on this, including al-Shafi‘i, who said that one says this in both obligatory and voluntary prayers. Some scholars of Kufa said that one says it in voluntary prayer, but not in the obligatory prayer. Abu Isa said: He is called al-Majishuni because he was descended from al-Majishun.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source records a difference over whether this extended praise is recited in obligatory prayer as well as voluntary prayer.
The compiler contrasts al-Shafi'i's view covering both prayer types with the Kufa scholars' view limiting the formula to voluntary prayer.
Is the difference in scope between obligatory and voluntary prayer clearly attributed?
