Ishaq ibn Musa al-Ansari narrated to us: Ma‘n narrated to us: Malik narrated to us, from Sumayy, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah said: When the imam says Sami Allahu liman hamidah, Allah hears whoever praises Him, say Rabbana wa laka al-hamd, Our Lord, to You belongs all praise. Whoever’s words coincide with the angels’ words will have his past sins forgiven.
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Some scholars among the Prophet’s Companions and those after them acted on this: the imam says Sami Allahu liman hamidah followed by Rabbana wa laka al-hamd, while those praying behind the imam say only Rabbana wa laka al-hamd. This was the view of Ahmad. Ibn Sirin and others said that those behind the imam say both formulas, just as the imam does. This was the view of al-Shafi‘i and Ishaq.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The compiler records two views on whether those praying behind the imam say only the praise response or repeat both formulas.
Ahmad's view has the congregation behind the imam say only Rabbana wa laka al-hamd; Ibn Sirin, al-Shafi'i, and Ishaq have them say both formulas.
Is the difference in the follower response clearly attributed to each view?
