Qutaybah narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Salim, from his father, that the Prophet said: ‘Bilal gives the call to prayer during the night, so eat and drink until you hear the call to prayer of Ibn Umm Maktum.’

Abu Isa said: Reports on this subject are also related from Ibn Mas‘ud, A’ishah, Unaysah, Anas, Abu Dharr, and Samurah. The hadith of Ibn Umar is hasan sahih. The scholars differed concerning the call to prayer at night: some held that if the caller gives it at night, that is sufficient and he need not repeat it; this was the view of Malik, Ibn al-Mubarak, al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Others held that if he gives it at night, he repeats it; this was the view of Sufyan al-Thawri.

Hammad ibn Salamah narrated from Ayyub, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, that Bilal gave the call to prayer at night, and the Prophet instructed him to announce: ‘The servant has slept.’ Abu Isa said: This report is not preserved. The sound version is what Ubayd Allah ibn Umar and others narrated from Nafi, from Ibn Umar: the Prophet said, ‘Bilal gives the call to prayer during the night, so eat and drink until Ibn Umm Maktum gives the call to prayer.’ Abd al-Aziz ibn Abi Rawwad narrated from Nafi that a caller for Umar gave the call at night, so Umar instructed him to repeat it. This report is also unsound, since its chain from Nafi to Umar is interrupted; perhaps Hammad intended this report. The sound version is the narration of Ubayd Allah and others from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, and of al-Zuhri from Salim, from Ibn Umar, that the Prophet said: ‘Bilal gives the call to prayer during the night.’ Abu Isa explained that if Hammad’s report were sound, this hadith would make no sense: the Prophet’s statement about Bilal calling at night informs them of what is to come. Had he instructed Bilal to repeat the call after giving it before dawn, he would not have said that Bilal calls at night. Ali ibn al-Madini said Hammad ibn Salamah’s report from Ayyub, from Nafi, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet is not preserved, and Hammad erred in it.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic includes extensive hadith-critical and legal commentary beyond the English witness.

The compiler judges this raised report not preserved and distinguishes a separate interrupted report from Nafi to Umar.

Is the distinction between the disputed Prophetic report and the separate interrupted report clear?
