Nasr ibn Ali narrated to us: Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir, from the Prophet, who said: Do not enter upon women whose husbands are away, for Satan flows through each of you like blood. We said: Even you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Even me, but Allah has helped me against him, so I am safe from him. Abu Isa said: This hadith is gharib through this route. Some critics questioned Mujalid ibn Sa'id because of his memory. Ali ibn Khashram said: I heard Sufyan ibn Uyaynah explain the Prophet's words, “Allah has helped me against him, so I am safe from him,” to mean, “I am safe from him.” Sufyan said: Satan does not become Muslim. “Women whose husbands are away” means women whose husbands are absent; the plural refers to several such women.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report gives two possible understandings of aslama: that the Prophet was protected from Satan, or that Satan submitted. Sufyan rejects the latter reading.
