حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ كَانَ زَوْجُ بَرِيرَةَ عَبْدًا فَخَيَّرَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَاخْتَارَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَلَوْ كَانَ حُرًّا لَمْ يُخَيِّرْهَا .

Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us: Jarir ibn Abd al-Hamid informed us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from Aishah, who said: Barirah's husband was a slave. The Messenger of Allah gave her the choice, and she chose herself. Had he been a free man, she would not have been given the choice.
