Qutaybah told us: al-Layth told us, from Uqayl, from al-Zuhri, from Said ibn al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “If you tell someone to be quiet on Friday while the imam is preaching, you have engaged in idle talk.” Reports on this subject are also related from Ibn Abi Awfa and Jabir ibn Abdullah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is hasan sahih. Scholars acted upon it and considered it disliked for a person to speak while the imam is preaching. They said that if someone else speaks, one should correct him only by gesture. They differed over returning a greeting and asking Allah to have mercy on someone who sneezes while the imam is preaching. Some scholars allowed both, and this is the view of Ahmad and Ishaq. Some scholars among the Successors and others considered them disliked; this is the view of al-Shafii.
