Muhammad ibn Bashshar told us: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi told us: Jarir ibn Hazim told us, from Thabit, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would be spoken to about a need after he descended from the pulpit. Abu Isa said: We know this hadith only through the report of Jarir ibn Hazim. I heard Muhammad say: Jarir ibn Hazim made a mistake in this hadith. The sound version is what is reported from Thabit, from Anas: The prayer was called to begin, and a man took the Prophet by the hand and continued speaking to him until some of the people began to doze. Muhammad said: This is the hadith. Jarir ibn Hazim sometimes makes mistakes, though he is truthful. Muhammad said Jarir erred in the report from Thabit, from Anas, from the Prophet, saying: “When the prayer is called to begin, do not stand until you see me.” Muhammad said it is related from Hammad ibn Zayd that they were with Thabit al-Bunani when Hajjaj al-Sawwaf narrated from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Abdullah ibn Abi Qatadah, from his father, from the Prophet, who said: “When the prayer is called to begin, do not stand until you see me.” Jarir was mistaken and thought Thabit had narrated this to them from Anas, from the Prophet.
