Ibn Abi Umar told us: Sufyan told us, from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “If any of you is going to pray after Friday prayer, let him pray four units.” Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Al-Hasan ibn Ali told us: Ali ibn al-Madini told us, from Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, who said: We considered Suhayl ibn Abi Salih firm in hadith. Some scholars acted upon this. It is narrated that Abdullah ibn Masud used to pray four units before Friday prayer and four after it. It is also narrated that Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, instructed people to pray two units after Friday prayer, then four. Sufyan al-Thawri and Ibn al-Mubarak adopted the view of Ibn Masud. Ishaq said: If someone prays in the mosque on Friday, he should pray four units; if he prays at home, he should pray two. He based this on the report that the Prophet used to pray two units after Friday prayer at home, and on the Prophetic hadith, “If any of you is going to pray after Friday prayer, let him pray four units.” Abu Isa said: Ibn Umar was the one who reported that the Prophet used to pray two units after Friday prayer at home. After the Prophet, Ibn Umar himself prayed two units in the mosque after Friday prayer, then prayed four more. Ibn Abi Umar told us this: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah told us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ata, who said: I saw Ibn Umar pray two units after Friday prayer, then pray four more. Said ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Makhzumi told us: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah told us, from Amr ibn Dinar, who said: I never saw anyone more precise in hadith than al-Zuhri, nor anyone for whom gold and silver were less significant. To him they were like dung. Abu Isa said: I heard Ibn Abi Umar say that he heard Sufyan ibn Uyaynah say Amr ibn Dinar was older than al-Zuhri.
