Narrated Abu Hurayrah: It was asked, Messenger of Allah, what deed is equal to jihad? He replied: You are not capable of it. They asked him two or three times, and each time he said: You are not capable of it. Then, the third time, he said: The one who strives in the cause of Allah is like someone who fasts and prays without tiring of prayer or fasting until the fighter in the cause of Allah returns.

Reports on this subject are also narrated from al-Shifa, Abdullah ibn Hubshi, Abu Musa, Abu Said, Umm Malik al-Bahziyyah, and Anas.

This hadith is Hasan Sahih. It has been reported through more than one chain from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah said, relating the words of Allah, Mighty and Sublime: The fighter in My cause is under My guarantee. If I take his life, I make him inherit Paradise; and if I return him, I return him with reward or spoils of war.

Narrated Fadalah ibn Ubayd: The Messenger of Allah said: A person deeds come to an end when they die, except for someone who dies guarding the frontier in the cause of Allah. His deeds continue to grow until the Day of Resurrection, and he is protected from the trial of the grave. I also heard the Messenger of Allah say: The fighter is one who strives against his own self.

Reports on this subject are also narrated from Uqbah ibn Amir and Jabir.

The hadith of Fadalah is Hasan Sahih.

Narrated Abu al-Aswad, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and Sulayman ibn Yasar, who reported to him from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said: Whoever fasts for one day in the cause of Allah, Allah distances him from the Fire by seventy autumns. One of the two said seventy, while the other said forty.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is Gharib through this chain. Abu al-Aswad was Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Nawfal al-Asadi al-Madani.

Narrated Abu Said al-Khudri: The Prophet said: Whenever a servant fasts for one day in the cause of Allah, that day distances the Fire from his face by seventy autumns.

Narrated Abu Umamah al-Bahili: The Prophet said: Whoever fasts for one day in the cause of Allah, Allah places between him and the Fire a trench as wide as the distance between the heavens and the earth.

Narrated Khuraym ibn Fatik: The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever spends an amount in the cause of Allah, it is recorded for him seven hundred times over.

Abu Isa said: A report on this subject is also narrated from Abu Hurayrah. This hadith is Hasan. We know it only through the narration of al-Rukayn ibn al-Rabi, a narrator in its chain.

Narrated Adi ibn Hatim al-Tai: He asked the Messenger of Allah, Which charity is best? He replied: Serving someone in the cause of Allah, providing the shade of a tent, or providing a riding mount in the cause of Allah.

Abu Isa said: This hadith has also been reported from Muawiyah ibn Salih in mursal form, and Zayd was contradicted regarding part of its chain.

He said: Al-Walid ibn Jamil also reported this hadith from al-Qasim Abu Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Umamah, from the Prophet.

Narrated Abu Umamah: The Messenger of Allah said: The best charitable spending is providing the shade of a tent in the cause of Allah, giving an enslaved person in the cause of Allah, or providing a riding camel in the cause of Allah.

Narrated Yazid ibn Abi Maryam: Abayah ibn Rifaah ibn Rafi met me as I was walking to Friday prayer and said: Rejoice, for these footsteps of yours are in the cause of Allah. I heard Abu Abs say that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever gets his feet dusty in the path of Allah, they are forbidden to the Fire.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is Hasan Sahih Gharib. Abu Abs was named Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabr. Reports on this subject are also narrated from Abu Bakr and a man among the Companions of the Prophet.

Yazid ibn Abi Maryam was a man from Syria. Al-Walid ibn Muslim, Yahya ibn Hamzah, and others among the Syrians narrated from him.

Burayd ibn Abi Maryam was from Kufa. His father was a Companion of the Prophet named Malik ibn Rabiah. Burayd ibn Abi Maryam heard from Anas ibn Malik. Abu Ishaq al-Hamdani, Ata ibn al-Saib, Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq, and Shubah narrated hadiths from Burayd ibn Abi Maryam.

Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah said: A person who weeps out of fear of Allah will not enter the Fire until milk returns to the udder; and the dust of striving in the cause of Allah and the smoke of Hell will never be joined together.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is Hasan Sahih. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman was the freedman of Abu Talhah and was from Madinah.

Narrated Shurahbil ibn al-Simt: He said to Kaab ibn Murrah: Tell us something from the Messenger of Allah, but be careful. Kaab replied: I heard the Prophet say: Whoever grows a gray hair while in Islam, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.

Abu Isa said: Reports on this subject are also narrated from Fadalah ibn Ubayd and Abdullah ibn Amr. The report of Kaab ibn Murrah was narrated in this form by al-Amash, from Amr ibn Murrah.

This hadith has also been reported from Mansur, from Salim ibn Abi al-Jad, who included an intermediary between himself and Kaab ibn Murrah in the chain. This narrator is called Kaab ibn Murrah, and he is also called Murrah ibn Kaab al-Bahzi. The Companion known by this name is Kaab ibn Murrah al-Bahzi, who narrated some hadiths from the Prophet.

Narrated Amr ibn Abasah: The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever grows a gray hair in the cause of Allah, it will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is Hasan Sahih Gharib. The full name of Haywah ibn Shurayh was Haywah ibn Yazid al-Himsi.

Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Messenger of Allah said: Good is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection. A horse is of three kinds: a reward for one person, a means of livelihood for another, and a burden for a third. Whoever acquires a horse in the cause of Allah and prepares it for that purpose will earn a reward; whatever it consumes is recorded for him as a reward.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is Hasan Sahih. Malik ibn Anas narrated similarly from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abu Husayn: The Messenger of Allah said: Allah will admit three people to Paradise because of a single arrow: its maker, who intends good by making it; the one who shoots it; and the one who hands him the arrows. He also said: Practice archery and horseback riding. Archery is dearer to me than riding. Every pastime a Muslim engages in is futile except shooting his bow, training his horse, and playing with his wife, for these are rightful pursuits.
