Ali ibn Khashram informed us: Isa ibn Yunus informed us, from al-Hasan ibn Umarah, from Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Ubayd, from Isa ibn Talhah, from Muadh, that he wrote to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asking about vegetables, meaning garden produce. He replied: “There is nothing due on them.” Abu Isa said: The chain of this hadith is not sound, and nothing sound from the Prophet is established on this subject. It is only narrated as a mursal report from Musa ibn Talhah, from the Prophet. Scholars acted upon this and held that no charity is due on vegetables. Abu Isa said: Al-Hasan refers to Ibn Umarah, who is weak according to hadith scholars. Shubah and others considered him weak, and Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak abandoned his narrations.
