Qutaybah told us: al-Layth told us, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Sad ibn Sinan, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘The one who takes more than the due amount in charity is like one who withholds it.’ Related reports are narrated from Ibn Umar, Umm Salamah, and Abu Hurayrah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Anas is gharib through this route. Ahmad ibn Hanbal criticized Sad ibn Sinan. This is how al-Layth ibn Sad narrated it: from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Sad ibn Sinan, from Anas ibn Malik. Amr ibn al-Harith and Ibn Lahi ah narrated it from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from Sinan ibn Sad, from Anas. Muhammad said: The correct name is Sinan ibn Sad. The meaning of ‘the one who takes more than the due amount in charity is like one who withholds it’ is that the one who takes more than due is sinful, just as the one who withholds charity is sinful.
