Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Bashshar told us: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi told us: Sufyan ibn Said told us. Mahmud ibn Ghaylan also told us: Abd al-Razzaq told us: Sufyan informed us, from Sad ibn Ibrahim, from Rayhan ibn Yazid, from Abdullah ibn Amr, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: ‘Charity is not lawful for a wealthy person or for someone strong and physically sound.’ Related reports are narrated from Abu Hurayrah, Hubshi ibn Junadah, and Qabisah ibn Mukhariq. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr is hasan. Shubah narrated this hadith from Sad ibn Ibrahim with the same chain but did not attribute it to the Prophet. Another report from the Prophet says: ‘Asking is not lawful for a wealthy person or for someone strong and physically sound.’ If a strong person is in need and owns nothing, then charity given to him suffices for the giver, according to scholars. Some scholars understand this hadith to concern asking others for help.
