Muhammad ibn Bashshar told us: Makki ibn Ibrahim and Yusuf ibn Yaqqub al-Dubai al-Sadusi told us: Bahz ibn Hakim told us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: When something was brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he would ask: ‘Is this charity or a gift?’ If they said it was charity, he would not eat it; if they said it was a gift, he would eat it. Related reports are narrated from Salman, Abu Hurayrah, Anas, al-Hasan ibn Ali, Abu Umayrah (the grandfather of Muarraf ibn Wasil, whose name was Rushayd ibn Malik), Maymun ibn Mihran, Ibn Abbas, Abdullah ibn Amr, Abu Rafi, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Alqamah. This hadith is also narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Alqamah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Aqil, from the Prophet. The grandfather of Bahz ibn Hakim was Muawiyah ibn Haydah al-Qushayri. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Bahz ibn Hakim is hasan gharib.
