Fasting (Kitab Al-Siyam)

Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah was cupped while fasting. Abu Dawud said: Wuhaib ibn Khalid narrated the same from Ayyub through his chain; Jaafar ibn Rabiah and Hisham ibn Hassan also narrated the same from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas.

Ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah was cupped while fasting and in a state of ihram.

A Companion of the Prophet told Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla that the Messenger of Allah forbade cupping and continuous fasting, but did not make them unlawful, out of consideration for his Companions. He was told, "Messenger of Allah, you continue fasting until dawn." He replied, "I continue fasting until dawn, while my Lord feeds me and gives me drink."

Thabit reported that Anas said: We did not let a fasting person be cupped only because we disliked the resulting weakness.

A Companion of the Prophet reported that the Messenger of Allah said, "The fast is not broken by someone who vomits, has a wet dream, or is cupped."

Ma bad ibn Hudhah reported that the Prophet instructed people to apply perfumed antimony before sleep and said, "A fasting person should avoid it." Abu Dawud said: Yahya ibn Main told me this report about kohl is munkar, meaning it is rejected.

Ubayd Allah ibn Abi Bakr ibn Anas reported that Anas ibn Malik used to apply kohl while fasting.

Al-Amash said: I never saw any of our companions disapprove of a fasting person applying kohl. Ibrahim permitted a fasting person to use aloe as kohl.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said, "If vomiting overcomes a fasting person, he does not have to make up the fast; but if he induces vomiting, he must make it up." Abu Dawud said: Hafs ibn Ghiyath also narrated the same from Hisham.

Madan ibn Talhah reported that Abu al-Darda told him the Messenger of Allah vomited and broke his fast. I later met Thawban, the client of the Messenger of Allah, in the mosque of Damascus and told him what Abu al-Darda had said. Thawban replied, "He spoke the truth; I poured water for the ablution of the Messenger of Allah."

Aishah reported: The Messenger of Allah would kiss and be intimate while fasting, but he had the greatest control over his desire among you.

Aishah reported: During the month of fasting, the Prophet would kiss me.

Aishah reported: The Messenger of Allah would kiss me while he was fasting and I was fasting.

Umar ibn al-Khattab said: I felt desire and kissed while I was fasting. I said, "Messenger of Allah, today I have done something serious: I kissed while fasting." He asked, "What do you think if you rinse your mouth with water while fasting?" Isa ibn Hammad version adds: I said, "There is no harm in that." Then both versions agree that he said, "So what, then?"

Aishah reported that the Prophet would kiss her and suck her tongue while fasting. Ibn al-Arabi said: This chain is not sound.

Abu Hurayrah reported: A man asked the Prophet whether a fasting person could embrace his wife, and the Prophet permitted him. Another man came and asked the same, but the Prophet forbade him. The man who was permitted was elderly, while the one who was forbidden was young.

Aishah and Umm Salamah, the wives of the Prophet, reported that the Messenger of Allah would reach dawn in a state of major ritual impurity. Abdullah al-Adhrami version specifies that during Ramadan this could result from intercourse, not a wet dream, and that he would then fast. Abu Dawud said: Few narrators include the words "in Ramadan"; the report is simply that the Prophet would reach dawn in a state of major ritual impurity while fasting.

Aishah, the wife of the Prophet, reported: A man standing at the door said to the Messenger of Allah, "I reach dawn in a state of major ritual impurity, and I intend to fast." The Messenger of Allah said, "I too reach dawn in a state of major ritual impurity while intending to fast; I bathe and then fast." The man said, "You are not like us. Allah has forgiven your past and future sins." The Messenger of Allah became angry and said, "By Allah, I hope that I am the most God-fearing among you and the one who knows best what I follow."

Abu Hurayrah reported: A man came to the Prophet and said, "I am ruined." He asked, "What happened?" The man said, "I had intercourse with my wife during Ramadan." He asked, "Can you free a slave?" He said, "No." He asked, "Can you fast for two consecutive months?" He said, "No." He asked, "Can you feed sixty poor people?" He said, "No." He told him, "Sit down." A large basket of dates was brought to the Prophet, and he said, "Give it in charity." The man said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no family between Medinas two lava plains poorer than mine." The Messenger of Allah laughed until his incisors showed and said, "Then feed it to your family." Musaddad transmitted another wording: his canine teeth.

This report from al-Zuhri has the same meaning as the preceding account. Al-Zuhri added: This was a special concession for him alone. If a man did this today, he would have to offer expiation. Abu Dawud said: Al-Layth ibn Sad, al-Awzai, Mansur ibn al-Mutamir, and Irak ibn Malik narrated it with the same meaning as Ibn Uyaynah. Al-Awzai added, "And seek Allahs forgiveness."
