Translation
Ahmad ibn Salih narrated to us: Ibn Wahb narrated to us: Muʿawiyah informed me, from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr, from his father, from ʿAwf ibn Malik, who said: In the pre-Islamic era, we used to recite incantations. We said: “Messenger of Allah, what do you think of that?” He replied: “Show me your incantations. There is no harm in incantations so long as they contain no shirk.”
