حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُفَضَّلُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ فَضَالَةَ الْمِصْرِيَّ - عَنْ عَيَّاشِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ الْقِتْبَانِيِّ، أَنَّ شُيَيْمَ بْنَ بَيْتَانَ، أَخْبَرَهُ عَنْ شَيْبَانَ الْقِتْبَانِيِّ، قَالَ إِنَّ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنَ مُخَلَّدٍ اسْتَعْمَلَ رُوَيْفِعَ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ، عَلَى أَسْفَلِ الأَرْضِ ‏.‏ قَالَ شَيْبَانُ فَسِرْنَا مَعَهُ مِنْ كُومِ شَرِيكٍ إِلَى عَلْقَمَاءَ أَوْ مِنْ عَلْقَمَاءَ إِلَى كُومِ شَرِيكٍ - يُرِيدُ عَلْقَامَ - فَقَالَ رُوَيْفِعٌ إِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُنَا فِي زَمَنِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم لَيَأْخُذُ نِضْوَ أَخِيهِ عَلَى أَنَّ لَهُ النِّصْفَ مِمَّا يَغْنَمُ وَلَنَا النِّصْفُ وَإِنْ كَانَ أَحَدُنَا لَيَطِيرُ لَهُ النَّصْلُ وَالرِّيشُ وَلِلآخَرِ الْقَدَحُ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ يَا رُوَيْفِعُ لَعَلَّ الْحَيَاةَ سَتَطُولُ بِكَ بَعْدِي فَأَخْبِرِ النَّاسَ أَنَّهُمَنْ عَقَدَ لِحْيَتَهُ أَوْ تَقَلَّدَ وَتَرًا أَوِ اسْتَنْجَى بِرَجِيعِ دَابَّةٍ أَوْ عَظْمٍ فَإِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا صلى الله عليه وسلم مِنْهُ بَرِيءٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Ruwayfi' ibn Thabit

Yazid ibn Khalid ibn Abd Allah ibn Mawhab al-Hamdani narrated to us: Al-Mufaddal, meaning Ibn Fadalah al-Misri, narrated to us, from Ayyash ibn Abbas al-Qatbani, that Shuyaym ibn Baytan informed him, from Shayban al-Qatbani, who said: Maslamah ibn Mukhallad appointed Ruwayfi ibn Thabit over the lower land. Shayban said: We travelled with him from Kum Sharik to Alqamah, or from Alqamah to Kum Sharik (meaning Alqamah). Ruwayfi said: If any of us in the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, were to borrow his brother's riding camel on the condition that he gets half of whatever is acquired as booty and we get half, or if one of us would have the arrowhead and feathers fly for him while the other has the shaft. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to me: "O Ruwayfi, life may become long for you after me, so inform the people that whoever braids his beard, or wears a bowstring (as an amulet), or cleanses himself with animal dung or a bone, then Muhammad is quit of him."
