Qutaybah ibn Sa'id and others narrated to us: They said: Yahya ibn Sulaym narrated to us, from Ismail ibn Kathir, from Asim ibn Laqit ibn Sabrah, from his father Laqit ibn Sabrah, who said: I was in the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq—or among the delegation of Banu al-Muntafiq—to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He said: When we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, we did not find him in his house, but we found Aisha, the Mother of the Believers. He said: She ordered for us some khazirah (a dish of meat broth and flour), and it was prepared for us. And we were brought a qina'—and Qutaybah did not mention the qina', and the qina' is the tray containing dates.
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came and said: "Have you been provided with anything, or has anything been ordered for you?" He said: We said, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: While we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, suddenly a shepherd drove his sheep to the resting place, and with him was a newborn lamb bleating. He said: "What did it give birth to, O so-and-so?" He replied, "A female lamb." He said: "Then slaughter for us a sheep in its place."
Then he said: "Do not think"—and he did not say "la tahsabanna" (do not think)—"that we have slaughtered it for your sake. We have one hundred sheep, and we do not want them to increase; so whenever the shepherd gives birth to a lamb, we slaughter a sheep in its place."
He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, indeed I have a wife, and in her tongue is something"—meaning foul-mouthedness. He said: "Then divorce her."
He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, she has companionship, and I have a child from her." He said: "Then command her"—meaning advise her—"and if there is any good in her, she will do it; and do not strike your female companion as you strike your female slave."
He said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about ablution." He said: "Perform ablution thoroughly, interlace the fingers, and sniff water up into the nose deeply, unless you are fasting."
