Muhammad bin Al-Ala' narrated to us: Hafs bin Ghiyat narrated to us, from Al-A'mash, with this hadith. He said: If the religion were based on opinion, the bottom of the feet would be more deserving of wiping than the upper part, but the Prophet (ﷺ) wiped over the upper part of his leather socks. Waki' narrated it from Al-A'mash with his isnad, saying: I used to think that the bottom of the feet was more deserving of wiping than the upper part, until I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wiping over their upper parts – Waki' meant the leather socks. Isa bin Yunus narrated it from Al-A'mash similarly to how Waki' narrated it. And Abu Al-Sawda' narrated it from Ibn Abd Khayr from his father, who said: I saw Ali perform ablution and wash the top of his feet, and say: Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) doing it – and he drove the rest of the hadith.
