حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَلِمَةَ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ - رضى الله عنه - أَنَا وَرَجُلاَنِ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ - أَحْسِبُ فَبَعَثَهُمَا عَلِيٌّ - رضى الله عنه - وَجْهًا وَقَالَ إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ فَعَالِجَا عَنْ دِينِكُمَا ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَامَ فَدَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ فَدَعَا بِمَاءٍ فَأَخَذَ مِنْهُ حَفْنَةً فَتَمَسَّحَ بِهَا ثُمَّ جَعَلَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ فَأَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَيَخْرُجُ مِنَ الْخَلاَءِ فَيُقْرِئُنَا الْقُرْآنَ وَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا اللَّحْمَ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ يَحْجُبُهُ - أَوْ قَالَ يَحْجُزُهُ - عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةَ

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib

Hafs ibn Umar narrated to us: Shu'bah narrated to us, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abdullah ibn Salamah, who said: I entered upon Ali - may Allah be pleased with him -, along with two other men, a man from us and a man from Banu Asad - I think Ali sent them for some task - and he said: "You two are strong men, so strive for your religion." Then he stood up and entered the latrine, then came out and asked for water. He took a handful of it and wiped himself with it, then began to recite the Quran. They objected to that, so he said: "Verily, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to come out from the privy and recite the Quran to us, and eat meat with us, and nothing prevented him - or he said: nothing hindered him - from the Quran, except major ritual impurity (janabah)."
