Sunan Abi Dawud
Sunan Abi Dawud 2890
A man came to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari and Salman ibn Rabi'ah and asked them about the share of a daughter, a son's daughter, and a sister through a father and mother. They replied: 'For the daughter is half, and for the sister through the father and mother is half,' and they did not give the son's daughter anything. 'Go to Ibn Mas'ud, for he will agree with us.' So the man came to him, asked him, and informed him of their verdict. He said: 'I would then have strayed and would not be among the rightly guided. Rather, I will judge concerning it with the judgment of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: for the daughter is half, and for the son's daughter is a share to complete the two-thirds, and whatever remains is for the sister through the father and mother.'
