‘A’ishah added to this report: ‘Abu Bakr refused her request and said, “I will not abandon anything the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do without doing it myself, for I fear that if I leave any part of his practice I will go astray.” As for the Messenger of Allah’s property in Medina, ‘Umar handed it to ‘Ali and al-‘Abbas, and ‘Ali prevailed in its administration. ‘Umar retained Khaybar and Fadak, saying, “They are the Messenger of Allah’s charity property, set aside for the claims and contingencies that arose. Their management belongs to whoever holds authority.”’ The narrator said: ‘They have remained so to this day.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • This is a supplementary wording attributed to ‘A’ishah. The clause fa-ghalabahu ‘Ali ‘alayha is rendered as ‘‘Ali prevailed in its administration’; it does not say that ‘Ali seized the property. The term sadaqah is retained as a status of the property.

The phrase fa-ghalabahu ‘Ali ‘alayha is terse and could be read as ‘‘Ali prevailed over him regarding it’; the nature of the administration is not specified.

Should the translation state simply that ‘Ali prevailed in the matter, or specify that he took over administration?
