Al-Zuhri explained the verse ‘You spurred neither horse nor camel for it’: the Prophet ﷺ made a peace agreement with the people of Fadak and with some towns whose names al-Zuhri could not remember, while he was besieging another people. They sent him an offer of peace. The verse means that the property was obtained without fighting. Al-Zuhri said that Banu al-Nadir belonged exclusively to the Prophet ﷺ: the Muslims did not conquer it by force but took it under a peace agreement. The Prophet ﷺ distributed it among the Emigrants and gave nothing to the Helpers except for two men who were in need.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Al-Zuhri explicitly says he could not remember the names of the other towns. The report distinguishes peaceful surrender from conquest by force and records two needy Helpers as exceptions to the distribution among Emigrants.
