Abu al-Bakhtari said: ‘I heard a report from a man and liked it, so I asked him to write it down for me. He brought it to me written out clearly. It said: “Al-‘Abbas and ‘Ali entered upon ‘Umar while Talhah, al-Zubayr, ‘Abd al-Rahman, and Sa‘d were with him. The two were disputing. ‘Umar said to Talhah, al-Zubayr, ‘Abd al-Rahman, and Sa‘d, ‘Do you not know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “All the property of a Prophet is charity, except what he provides for his family’s food and clothing. We are not inherited from”?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ ‘Umar said, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to spend from his property on his family and give whatever remained as charity.’ Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, and Abu Bakr governed for two years, managing it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had managed it.’” Abu al-Bakhtari then mentioned part of the report of Malik ibn Aws.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The report is transmitted by Abu al-Bakhtari from an unnamed man, whose written report he quotes. ‘Umar’s questioning and the witnesses’ affirmative reply are preserved. The final sentence says only that Abu al-Bakhtari mentioned part of Malik ibn Aws’s report; it is not translated as a continuation of the quoted speech.
The quoted statement uses sadaqah for all the Prophet’s property except family food and clothing; the relation between this summary and the separate reports about specific estates is not elaborated here.
Should sadaqah be rendered ‘charitable property’ in this broad formulation to distinguish it from voluntary alms?
