Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Jubayr ibn Mut‘im said that he and ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to discuss the fifth that he had allocated to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib. Jubayr said: ‘Messenger of Allah, you gave our brothers, Banu al-Muttalib, a share but gave us nothing, although our kinship to you is the same as theirs.’ The Prophet ﷺ replied: ‘Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib are one.’ Jubayr said that the Prophet ﷺ did not allocate that fifth to Banu ‘Abd Shams or Banu Nawfal as he did to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib. Abu Bakr distributed the fifth as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had, except that he did not give the Prophet’s relatives what the Prophet had given them. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab and, after him, ‘Uthman used to give them a share from it.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic says Banu al-Muttalib, not Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib, in the Prophet’s allocation and the response. The report distinguishes the allocations under the Prophet, Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthman.

The tribal name Banu al-Muttalib is distinct from Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib; the English witness inconsistently inserts ‘Abd.

Should the corpus follow the Arabic consistently as Banu al-Muttalib in all mentions?
