Jubayr ibn Mut‘im reported: ‘On the day of Khaybar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ assigned the share for close relatives to Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib, while leaving out Banu Nawfal and Banu ‘Abd Shams. ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan and I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, we do not deny the merit of Banu Hashim, given the position Allah has granted you among them. But why have you given to our brothers, Banu al-Muttalib, and left us out, when our kinship to you is the same?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “I and Banu al-Muttalib never separated, in the pre-Islamic period or in Islam. We and they are one.”’ He interlaced his fingers.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The tribal name in this Arabic is Banu al-Muttalib, not Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib. The Prophet’s gesture of interlacing his fingers accompanies the statement that the two groups are one.
The Arabic tribal name is Banu al-Muttalib; the English witness repeatedly adds ‘Abd al-.
Should the text preserve Banu al-Muttalib exactly as in this Arabic source despite the witness’s differing form?
