Al-Suddi explained the ‘close relatives’ as Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
This is an explanatory statement attributed to al-Suddi. It names Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib, in contrast to the preceding hadith reports, which use Banu al-Muttalib.
فِي ذِي الْقُرْبَى قَالَ هُمْ بَنُو عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ .
This narrator’s gloss identifies the close relatives as Banu ‘Abd al-Muttalib, while the preceding hadith reports allocate the share to Banu al-Muttalib.
Should an editorial note preserve this difference between al-Suddi’s gloss and the wording of the preceding reports?
