‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla reported that he heard ‘Ali say: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me with the one-fifth share of the fifth. I distributed it to those entitled to it during the lifetimes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr, and ‘Umar. Property was then brought to ‘Umar, who called me and said, “Take it.” I said, “I do not want it.” He said, “Take it; you have a greater right to it.” I replied, “We have no need of it.” So he placed it in the public treasury.’

Khums al-khums is rendered ‘the one-fifth share of the fifth’ to preserve the layered fraction. ‘I distributed it to those entitled to it’ renders waḍa‘tuhu mawāḍi‘ahu.
عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ،
Khums al-khums is a technical allocation; the English witness simplifies it to ‘the fifth’ and may lose the nested fraction.
Should the corpus spell out ‘one-fifth of the fifth’ or use a standard term for this allocation?
