Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla reported from ‘Ali: Al-‘Abbas, Fatimah, Zayd ibn Harithah, and I gathered with the Prophet ﷺ. I asked him to entrust me with our share of this fifth, as stated in the Book of Allah, so I could distribute it during his lifetime and no one would dispute it with me after his death. He did so. I distributed it during the Prophet’s lifetime, and Abu Bakr then entrusted it to me. In the last year of ‘Umar’s rule, a large amount of property came to him and he set aside our share. He sent for me, but I said that we had enough that year while the Muslims needed it, and asked him to return it to them. He did so. No one called me about it after ‘Umar. When I left ‘Umar, I met al-‘Abbas, who said I had deprived them that day of something that would never be returned. He was a shrewd man.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report says ‘Ali was put in charge of distributing their share; it does not say that he personally owned it. The closing comment ‘He was a shrewd man’ refers to al-‘Abbas.

The phrase haqqana min hadha al-khums refers to ‘our due/share from this fifth’; its exact legal portion is not given in this wording.

Should ‘our share’ be retained without specifying the amount, as in this translation?
