Wills (Kitab Al-Wasaya)

Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us: Hammad narrated to us, from Hisham, from his father, from 'A'ishah, that a woman said: ‘Messenger of Allah, my mother died suddenly. Had this not happened, she would have given charity and made a donation. Will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?’ The Prophet (ﷺ) replied: ‘Yes, give charity on her behalf.’’

Ahmad ibn Mani' narrated to us: Rawh ibn 'Ubadah narrated to us: Zakariyya ibn Ishaq narrated to us: 'Amr ibn Dinar informed us, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that a man said: ‘Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. Will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ The man said: ‘I have an orchard, and I call you to witness that I have given it in charity on her behalf.’

Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazyad narrated to us: My father informed me: al-Awza'i narrated to us: Hassan ibn 'Atiyyah narrated to me, from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that al-'As ibn Wa'il stipulated in his will that one hundred enslaved people be freed on his behalf. His son Hisham freed fifty, and his son 'Amr wanted to free the remaining fifty on his behalf. He said: ‘Let me ask the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) first.’ He went to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘Messenger of Allah, my father stipulated that one hundred enslaved people be freed; Hisham has freed fifty on his behalf, and fifty remain. Shall I free them on his behalf?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied: ‘If he had been a Muslim, and you had freed enslaved people on his behalf, given charity on his behalf, or performed Hajj on his behalf, that would have reached him.’

Muhammad ibn al-'Ala' narrated to us: Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq related to them, from Hisham ibn 'Urwah, from Wahb ibn Kaysan, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who informed him: ‘My father died owing thirty wasqs to a Jewish man. Jabir asked the man to defer the debt, but he refused. Jabir asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to intercede with him on his behalf. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came and spoke to the Jewish man, asking him to accept the dates from Jabir's palm trees in settlement of the debt owed to him, but he refused. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) then asked him to grant Jabir more time, but he refused.’ The narrator then related the rest of the report.
