Yahya ibn Bukayr related to us, saying: al-Layth related to us, from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab, from Thabit ibn Qays, that Abu Hurayra said: The people were struck by wind on the road to Mecca while ‘Umar was performing Hajj. It grew strong. ‘Umar asked those around him: “What is the wind?” They had no answer. I urged my mount on and caught up with him. I said: “I heard that you asked about the wind. I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: ‘The wind is from the relief of Allah. It brings mercy and it brings punishment. Do not curse it; ask Allah for its good and seek refuge in Him from its evil.’”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic uses رَوْح (rawh, relief or mercy), not رُوح (ruh, spirit); this is not a wordplay on ‘wind’ and ‘spirit’ in the supplied wording.

The witness identifies the second word as ruh (“spirit”), but the Arabic vocalization here is rawh, meaning relief or mercy.

Should the English remove the unsupported ruh wordplay?
