Isma‘il ibn Aban related to us, saying: ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram related to us, saying: Shahr related to us, saying: Ibn ‘Abbas related to me, saying: While the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was sitting in the courtyard of his house in Mecca, ‘Uthman ibn Maz‘un passed by him and smiled at him. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him: “Won’t you sit down?” He replied: “Yes.” The Prophet sat facing him. As he was speaking with him, the Prophet’s gaze lifted toward the sky, and he said: “The Messenger of Allah has just come to me while you were sitting here.” He asked: “What did he say to you?” He said: “Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to close relatives; and He forbids indecency, wrongdoing, and transgression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.” (Qur’an 16:90) ‘Uthman said: “That was when faith became firmly established in my heart and I came to love Muhammad.”

  • أَتَانِي رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم آنِفًا

The Arabic says “the Messenger of Allah came to me just now”; the witness inserts the name ‘Abdullah, which is absent from the source and makes the phrase unclear.

Should the inserted name be removed from the English witness?
