‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah related to us, saying: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn Muhammad related to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Amr, from Abu Salama, from Abu Hurayra, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “My close allies on the Day of Resurrection are the God-fearing, even if one lineage is closer than another. People may come to me with their deeds, while you come carrying this world on your shoulders, calling: ‘O Muhammad!’ I will say: ‘No, no,’ and turn away in both directions.”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The closing gesture وَأَعْرَضَ فِي كِلا عِطْفَيْهِ is difficult; translated here as turning away in both directions.

The Arabic describes saying “no” and turning away on both sides; it does not say “I will have full power over them.”

Should the English witness be corrected to match the described gesture?
