حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ بُرْقَانَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ قَالَ: قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ: مَا تَعُدُّونَ الْكَرَمَ؟ وَقَدْ بَيَّنَ اللَّهُ الْكَرَمَ، فَأَكْرَمُكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ، مَا تَعُدُّونَ الْحَسَبَ؟ أَفْضَلُكُمْ حَسَبًا أَحْسَنُكُمْ خُلُقًا.

Abu Nu‘aym related to us, saying: Ja‘far ibn Burqan related to us, from Yazid, who said: Ibn ‘Abbas said: “What do you consider nobility? Allah has made nobility clear: the most noble of you in Allah’s sight is the most God-fearing. What do you consider good lineage? The best of you in lineage is the one with the finest character.”
