Adam related to us, saying: Shu‘ba related to us, from al-A‘mash, who said: I heard Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubayda relate from Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami, from ‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was at a funeral. He picked up something and began scratching the ground with it. He said: “There is no one among you whose place in the Fire and whose place in the Garden has not been written.” They said: “Messenger of Allah, should we then not rely on what has been written for us and abandon deeds?” He said: “Act, for each person is made easy for that for which he was created.” He added: “As for the one who is among the people of felicity, he will be made to do the deeds of felicity. As for the one who is among the people of misery, he will be made to do the deeds of misery.” Then he recited: “As for the one who gives, is mindful of Allah, and affirms the best [reward]…”
