Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 582

‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad related to us: ‘Abd al-Razzaq related to us: Ma‘mar informed us: Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abd al-Qari told me, from his father, that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab and a man from the Ansar were sitting together. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abd al-Qari came and sat with them. ‘Umar said, “We do not like anyone to repeat our conversation.” ‘Abd al-Rahman replied, “I do not sit with those people, Commander of the Faithful.” ‘Umar said, “Of course you do; sit with this person and that person, but do not repeat our conversation.” Then he said to the Ansari, “Who do you think people say will be the caliph after me?” The Ansari named several men among the Muhajirun but did not name ‘Ali. ‘Umar said, “Why do they turn away from Abu al-Hasan? By Allah, he is the most qualified of them, if he were placed in charge of them, to set them upon a path of truth.”

The translation preserves the report’s wording about repeating their conversation; the exact sense of يرفع حديثنا depends on the context and may mean divulging or circulating what they said.
Abu al-Hasan is ‘Ali.
يرفع حديثنا literally concerns raising or carrying their conversation; in this context it seems to mean repeating or divulging it.
Does “repeat our conversation” capture the sense better than the witness’s “stop our conversation”?
