حَدَّثَنَا قَيْسُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا طَالِبُ بْنُ حُجَيْرٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي هُودُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، سَمِعَ جَدَّهُ مَزِيدَةَ الْعَبْدِيَّ قَالَ: جَاءَ الأَشَجُّ يَمْشِي حَتَّى أَخَذَ بِيَدِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَبَّلَهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم: أَمَا إِنَّ فِيكَ لَخُلُقَيْنِ يُحِبُّهُمَا اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ، قَالَ: جَبْلاً جُبِلْتُ عَلَيْهِ، أَوْ خُلِقَا مَعِي؟ قَالَ: لاَ، بَلْ جَبْلاً جُبِلْتَ عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَبَلَنِي عَلَى مَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ.

Qays ibn Hafs related to us: Talib ibn Hujayr al-‘Abdi related to us: Hud ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Sa‘d told me that he heard his grandfather, Mazidah al-‘Abdi, say: Al-Ashajj came walking until he took the Prophet’s hand and kissed it. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him, “You possess two qualities that Allah and His Messenger love.” He asked, “Are they qualities with which I was naturally endowed, or were they formed in me?” He replied, “No, rather they are qualities with which you were naturally endowed.” He said, “Praise be to Allah, who endowed me with what Allah and His Messenger love.”

The Arabic does not name the two qualities in this report; they are identified in the preceding reports as forbearance and deliberation. This translation does not insert those names into the narration.
قَالَ: جَبْلاً جُبِلْتُ عَلَيْهِ،
The Arabic asks whether the qualities are an ingrained disposition or were formed with him; the witness’s “acquired” interpretation is broader.
