Ahmad ibn Khalid related to us: Muhammad ibn Ishaq related to us, from Sa‘id ibn Abi Sa‘id, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: A man from Banu Fazara gave the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, a she-camel, and he gave him something in return. The man was displeased with it. I heard the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, say from the pulpit: “One of them gives me a gift, then I give him in return according to what I have, and he is displeased. By Allah, after this year I will accept no gift from the Arabs except from a Qurashi, an Ansari, a Thaqafi, or a Dawsiyy.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic says the Prophet compensated him according to what he had available. It specifies no gift from the Arabs after that year except from members of Quraysh, the Ansar, Thaqif, or Daws.
